Columbia Borough Yard Waste Facility |
FOOD WASTE PILOT PROGRAM
Why Does Columbia Borough Compost Food Waste?
In 2003, DEP conducted a waste steam study to identify the composition of incoming landfill materials in the South-Central Region of Pennsylvania. Their results were rather surprising; 33.7% of the total incoming landfill material was organic, and food waste was number one on the list of the top 10 most prevalent materials. For this reason, DEP has begun to encourage food waste composting more than ever. In the summer of 2005, Columbia Borough agreed to lend support by beginning a food waste pilot at the Borough Farm. Currently, the borough has partnered with the Columbia High School and Musser's Market to collect pre-consumer food waste. Eventually, the Borough hopes to expand its partnership to include other local supermarkets and restaurants.
