Board of Health
The Board of Health is a relatively unique group in Lancaster County.  Unlike most municipalities which rely on the PA Department of Agriculture for Eating & Drinking Establishment inspections and on the PA Department of Health for sanitation issues, Columbia has chosen to perform these responsibilities to maintain rapid, coordinated, local control.

Recent/Continuing Projects

1.  The Community Life Network continues to expand in scope in an effort to provide needed services to area residents.  The following services are available in conjunction with the Network located at the Columbia Health Center, 306 North Seventh Street:

 Career Link
 Family Services Counseling
 Medical Assistance System Entry
 MH/MR System Entry
 Tabor Financial Counseling
 Personal Counseling

2.  The Seventh Annual 2006 Spring Clean-Up (April) was another cooperative success. Through the volunteer efforts of Gamby Disposal, River Valley Disposal & Johnson, Inc., several elected and appointed local officials, and – most of all - the willingness of the residents, the town-wide clean-up effort netted tons of furniture, tires, scrap metal and white appliances in an effort to keep properties free of large nuisances and recyclables.

3.  Members of the Board of Health volunteer time to survey the Borough for health & sanitation issues on a weekly basis.  Stagnant pools of water, tires, rubbish, vacant buildings and abandoned refrigerators are some of the safety items regularly found and resolved in an effort to keep the Borough safe and sanitary.

4.  The Board remains vigilant to chronic concerns such as deteriorating buildings which may cause lead paint inhalation toxicity, situations which involve intentional or accidental chemical spills, and to unique threats to quality of life from changing conditions like the defeated Methodone Clinic proposal of 2000.
