Ironville Pike Safe Routes to School
Work is set to resume on March 16, 2015 weather permitting. Traffic control will be in effect until the project is complete.
Since no busing is available to Columbia Borough school students, it is imperative that designated walking routes be handicapped accessible and in optimum condition. Sidewalks on Ironville Pike are currently non-existent or are in poor condition. Additional housing developments have been constructed along Ironville Pike, which has created heavy car and truck traffic, for which no sidewalks are available to the students attending Taylor or Park Elementary or the Columbia Jr/Sr High School.
Columbia Borough received federal funding in 2010 in the amount of $1,033,000 to put new curbing and sidewalks as well as drain pipe and inlets on Ironville Pike from the Borough line to 9th St to greatly improve the safety of students walking or biding to school. This infrastructure will serve to link several new housing developments to the schools. The addition of crosswalks and appropriate signage will permit safe crossing at intersections.
After several years of waiting to obtain the necessary permits, etc the project was put out to bid February 28, 2014 with a bid opening date of March 27, 2014 for all submittals. The bids came in over budget so the project is awaiting a decision as to whether or not more funding can be made available or the project will need to be rebid. Additional funding was made available and construction is set to begin September 8, 2014. Watch for detours/construction delays.
Work will Start Monday, Sept 8, 2014. The first phase will be work between 9th St. and 11th/Kinderhook Rd. This work will include drainage improvements, widening, curb and pavement repair. The work will be approximately 3 weeks. A detour will be in place closing this portion of Ironville Pike to through traffic during this time. The intersection of Kinderhook Road will be worked under a flagging operation and be open to traffic at all times.
Upon completion of the above, work will commence between 11th and 13th Sts. This work will also include drainage improvements, curb and reconstruction. This work will be approximately 3 weeks also. A detour will be put in place closing this portion of Ironville Pike to through traffic.
Work will then be done between 13th St and Columbia Borough line. This work will include drainage improvements, widening, curb and trench repair. This work will be approximately 3 weeks. A detour will be put in place closing this portion of Ironville Pike to through traffic.
The final work will include the placement of sidewalk, paving and final grading along the entire portion of the project. This work will be completed under a flagging operation.
