Columbia Borough is exploring opportunities to enhance Walnut Street between Third Street and Front Street with pedestrian and bicycle accommodations that will promote safe travel to the downtown and connections to the Lancaster County Northwest River Trail and proposed bike lanes on the Veterans Memorial Bridge. Two-way protected bike lanes are proposed on the northwest side of Walnut Street. A raised island with street trees separates the bike lanes from vehicle traffic and on-street parking. To accommodate the improvements vehicle traffic on Walnut Street is one-way circulation with traffic heading southwest toward the river. Parking is provided on both sides of the vehicular traffic lane. In addition to street trees, other aesthetic and safety improvements include brick pavement accents, bulb-outs at intersections, planters, banners, and new crosswalks.
A Neighborhood Meeting/Open House is planned on June 23, 2021, at 5:30 pm at Columbia Crossing in River Park to present the Walnut Street Streetscape Enhancements and gather resident input.
